Six Reasons Why You Should Switch to a Variable Speed Pump.  Save Money!

If you’ve been wondering how to lower your pool maintenance costs, then you need to consider switching to a variable speed pump.

You might be shocked to learn that your swimming pool pump motor consumes more energy than almost ANY other household appliance.

In fact, pool pumps are only second to air conditioners IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION.

Therefore, replacing your single speed pool pump to WITH a new variable speed pump will help lower your electrical bill.

Reasons to Switch to a Variable Speed Pump

There are many beneficial reasons to switch your pool pump, here are a few of them.

1. Energy Efficiency

Depending on the size of your pool a variable speed (VS) motor can use 50% to 75% less energy than traditional single speed motors and save you hundreds of dollars a year on your electrical bill.

Here is a sample of how much you could be saving a year!

The following example compares filtering 12 hours a day (recommended time for most of the year in the south) with a single speed and filtering 18 hours a day (year-round) with a variable speed pump.

As you can see, you can filter your pool for longer, which is better, for cheaper! Want to check how much you could potentially save on your energy bill? Click here.

These annual savings REALLY add up if looked at over a 3 Year and 10 period of time.

Even with the initial purchase cost of a new variable speed pump,

You will save almost $2,000 in the first three years of ownership and over $7,000 in the course of ten years.”

Also, to top it off, your pool will look and be better than ever!

2. Durability

Variable speed motors are fan-cooled and wholly enclosed, and they run at lower speeds. Therefore, the engine stays cooler which will help preserve the bearings and the motor itself.

Because single speed motor pumps are standard induction, they have vents which can allow water, debris, and critters inside which can damage the pump.

3. They Are Quieter!

For those who are sensitive to noise, this may be the best news.

Traditional single speed motors need to run at 3,450 RPM’s which makes them loud. Variable speed pumps, however, can run as low as 600 RPM’s, this helps reduce their noise levels.

4. Change in Energy Efficiency Regulations

If you need to replace your single speed pool pump, make sure you invest in a variable speed pump.

The reason for this is, the U.S. Department of Energy has finalized its federal regulation concerning minimum efficiency standards for pool pumps, which will take effect in 2021.

Under the new regulations, single-speed pumps will no longer comply with the minimum efficiency standards. Therefore, as of 2021, it is unclear if manufacturers will be able to honor warranties on single speeds sold in 2019 and 2020.

5. Better Filtering

A new variable speed pool pump will provide better filtering, which will give you the following benefits:

Filter Lasts Longer – There will be less wear and tear on your filter (cartridges and DE screens) as water is moving through the system at a slower rate
Filter Works Better – Your pool’s filter will filter better due to the lower speed of the water
Clarity of Water – Filtering your pool for longer means the water will stay clearer and cleaner!
