Swimming Pool Safety for Babies

Having a baby makes you see the world differently. On the one hand, you perceive the wonders of the world through the eyes of your baby. On the other hand, as a parent, you can’t help but notice all the potential dangers around you.

The question we get asked the most by new parents is:

“Is our swimming pool safe enough for our baby?”

In this article, we will discuss the different ways you can ensure your pool is safe for everyone, especially for your little bundle of joy.  Please share these water safety tips, Swimming Pool Safety for Babies to help prevent a tragedy.

Baby-Proof Your Pool

Accidents happen very quickly, and small children can drown in as little as 2-inches of water. Baby-proofing your pool can help avoid drowning incidents.

The best way to kid-proof your pool is by:

Installing a fence around the perimeter of your pool
Choose a rigid pool cover that can withstand the weight of a child
Install locks and latches on external doors and windows that lead to the pool
Purchase a pool alarm system that detects motion to alert you if your child has accidentally fallen in the pool

Be sure to check out Collin’s Hope at www.colinshope.org.  Colin’s Hope was formed in 2008 after four-year-old Colin Holst tragically drowned in a public pool, with lifeguards on duty and family members present. Their mission is to raise water safety awareness to prevent children from drowning. Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death for children under 5 and a leading cause for ages 1-14. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for each fatal drowning incident, five more children receive emergency care for submersion injuries.  While no-one is drownproof, drowning IS preventable.

Learn CPR

When considering swimming pool safety for babies, knowing CPR can make the difference between life and death.  If you have small children, it’s a good idea to take an infant CPR course. Knowing what to do if tragedy strikes can save your baby’s life.

Floating Devices Aren’t Enough

Your baby should wear a personal floating device while in the pool. However, never leave them alone in the pool. Inflatable toys can flip over and trap your baby underwater, and floaties may not be enough to keep your baby’s head above water either.

Replace Your Pool Drains

Pool drains are among the top five hidden home hazards, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The suction power of a pool drain is strong enough to hold an adult underwater, so imagine what it can do to a small child or an infant.

Replace any faulty or missing drain cover with one with an anti-entrapment system. It is also a good idea to install an automatic pump shut off where it will be easily accessible.

Are Chlorinated Pools Safe for Babies?

The answer is yes, provided your pool is well maintained and clean.

This is what happens when your pool is not well maintained. Chlorine is used to kill bacteria that enter the water. However, when choline interacts with dirt, sweat, urine, poop, and body lotions, a chemical reaction occurs, causing byproducts known as trihalomethanes and chloramines.

These byproducts linger on the surface of the pool in gaseous form and can cause eye and respiratory irritation. If your pool has a strong chlorine smell, it means there are too many trihalomethanes and chloramines in it. In other words, your pool is dirty, and neither you nor your baby should be swimming in it.
