Swimming Hygiene, It’s a Thing

You brush your teeth before bed, you wash your hands before each meal, and you take a shower every day, (if you are not doing those things; you really should… just saying); we can all agree good hygiene is a habit worth having, and it’s one that extends to the swimming pool as well.

If you haven’t heard of swimming hygiene before, well let me tell you, it really is a thing! I promise I am not making this up. Swimming hygiene is especially important if you plan on visiting a public pool, but it also applies to your home swimming pool.

The idea of following swimming hygiene is to help prevent what is known as Recreational Water Illnesses (RWI) which are caused by germs. The most common RWI’s is diarrhea, but they also include ear, eye, respiratory and wound infections.

Getting infected is easy as it can happen with either contact or swallowing of contaminated water. See, germs can enter the water in your pool in different ways, but the most common reason is swimmers themselves. Swimmers can contaminate the water with sweat, urine, poop, dirt, or debris, that they drag in when they enter the water.

The chlorine and other disinfectants used in your pool help control the germs but, they are not magical, and things like sunscreen, lotions, and even sunlight can compromise chlorine and PH levels, making your pool the ideal breeding ground for germs; to avoid this, you must do your part as well.

10 Common Sense Swimming Hygiene Tips

To help keep you and your family safe here are some tips for good swimming hygiene:

1. Shower with soap and water before entering the pool. This will help reduce the amount of dirt, sweat and other undesirables from contaminating the water.

2. Wash your hands with soap and water after every bathroom break. Traces of urine and chlorine are not a good combination.

3. Don’t go swimming if you have the stomach flu, diarrhea, or an infection. Although chlorine and other detergents can kill germs this time and you could infect someone else.

4. Take your kids out of the pool for regular bathroom breaks, don’t let them pee or poop in the pool. If they do, get everyone out of the pool and give us a call, we will get there as soon as possible to clean up the mess.  On a side note, you should never leave children unattended in or near a pool to avoid any accidents.

5. Never swallow pool water. Not only is it not a good idea to have chlorinated water in your system, but you could also be swallowing germs as well.

6. If you have babies, never change their diapers near the pool this will help to keep germs away from the pool.

7. Don’t go into the water if it looks dirty or the water is murky.
