Sun Protection Tips for Poolside Fun

Sun Protection Tips for Poolside Fun

As the hot temperatures start rolling in with the joys of summer, there is no better way to beat the heat than with a refreshing dip in the swimming pool. However, while swimming and soaking up the sun may be the best part of summer, it is still important to prioritize sun protection to make sure your poolside experience safe and fun. Here are some sun protection tips to remember while lounging by the swimming pool, allowing you to soak in the rays without risking sunburn or skin damage.

Apply Sunscreen Regularly
Sunscreen is your first line of defense against harmful UV rays. Before jumping in the pool, make sure to liberally apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to all exposed skin. Remember to reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating. Don’t forget those easy to miss places like the ears, back of the neck, and tops of the feet!

Find Shade During Peak Hours
While it might be tempting to soak up every ray of sunshine, it is still important to be mindful of the peak sun hours, generally between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. At these times, the UV rays are at their strongest, which does increase the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Look for shade under umbrellas or trees, especially if you are going to be spending long amounts of time by the pool.

Cover Up with Sun-Protective Clothing
When it comes to sun protection, clothing is definitely your friend. Consider wearing lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants made specifically from tightly woven fabrics to keep your skin shielded from UV exposure. In addition, don’t forget to wear a wide brimmed hat to protect your face, ears, and neck, as well as sunglasses with UV protection to keep your eyes safe.

Stay Hydrated
Staying in the sun for too long can naturally lead to dehydration, especially when mixed with physical activity like swimming. Make sure to keep a water bottle with you and to prioritize drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day to stay hydrated. Additionally, try to avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks since they can contribute to dehydration. Hydrated skin is more resistant to sun damage, so make sure to drink up!

Practice Safe Swimming
While you’re swimming, don’t forget about sun protection. UV rays can penetrate through the water and still cause sunburn. Look for a water-resistant sunscreen meant for swimming and use it as direction.

As you begin to take in and enjoy all the fun of summer and spend hour after hour by the swimming pool, don’t forget to prioritize sun protection. By following these simple but effective tips, you can have fun by the pool while also protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Whether you’re relaxing under an umbrella or taking a refreshing dip in the pool, make sun protection a top priority. After all, a sun-safe summer is a happy and healthy summer!
