INVEST IN SWIMMING LESSONS

The best way to stay safe in and around the water is to learn how to swim. Children as early as 1 can enroll in swim lessons and it’s never too late for adults to learn. Find swim classes for the entire family by visiting, the redcross.org.

DON’T LEAVE CHILDREN UNATTENDED

Leaving children unattended in or around the water can cause increase risks for drowning. It only takes a split second for a child to get into a dangerous situation. Keeping a close eye on your little ones can save lives.

LEARN CPR FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS

Think about selecting a family member to learn CPR in case of an emergency. This type of life-saving knowledge is invaluable and is well worth the time spent to get the certification. For classes near you, visit the redcross.org.

DON’T FORGET LIFE JACKETS

If a member of your family doesn’t know how to swim, make sure they are wearing safety jackets when around any body of water. Avoid using water wings as they are not as effective as life jackets when lowering the risk of drowning.

DON’T SWALLOW POOL WATER

Teach young kids to spit out pool water when playing the pool. Also, teach them to refrain from chewing gum in the water to prevent choking.

BE AWARE OF HOW YOU FEEL

Stay in touch with how you are feeling during a long day of swimming. If you or your family member starts getting too tired or becomes exposed to too much sun, take a break.

INSTALL PROPER BARRIERS & ALARMS

Having a proper barrier or fence around your pool can keep young children safe and prevent accidents. Also, it’s a good idea to install alarms on all door leading to the pool area so you’re alerted if someone is venturing out, possibility unattended.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE WEATHER

Pay special attention to the forecast and if the weather is severe, stay out of the water.
