Swim, Don’t Burn! Learn Sun Safety by the Pool

Have fun, be cool, and make sure you practice sun safety by the pool! Now that summer’s here, we will be spending a lot more time swimming outdoors. And while some sun exposure is good for our health, overexposure can have serious side effects.

Overexposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can result in:

  • Painful Sunburns
  • Skin Cancer
  • Premature Aging of the Skin
  • Eye Damage including Cataracts
  • Immune System Suppression

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. The good news is that skin cancer is preventable.

Following these simple sun safety steps will help protect you and your family from overexposure while still enjoying your time in the sun.

Don’t Skimp on the Sunscreen

Apply a generous amount of a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher.

For best results, apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before you go outside. Remember to re-apply every two hours.

Don’t Get Sunburned!

Sunburns significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer, especially in children.

To avoid sunburns, go swimming early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Try stating out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm when the UV ray levels are high.

  • Build cardiovascular strength
  • Make you stronger
  • Help you lose weight
  • Tone your muscles

Unlike other sports such as running, swimming is a low- impact activity, which makes it an excellent alternative for anyone who has back or joint problems.

Cover Up!

We know the summer heat in Beaumont is brutal, and the thought of covering up seems unnatural. However, wearing protective clothing is the best way to protect your skin for overexposure.

Try looking for high-UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) swim shirts or rash guards and other UV protection clothing. When shopping for protective clothing, always look for The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation.

Don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat and wraparound UV blocking sunglasses when sitting by the pool.

Seek the Shade

Have your kids play in a shaded area to avoid UV exposure. It would be best if you always sat under an umbrella or covered patio while watching the kids in the pool.

Keep Newborns Out of the Sun

Infants have sensitive skin, which can quickly burn in the sun. For this reason, babies should wear protective clothing and when possible, they should be kept in the shade.

Check the UV Index

The UV index is an international standard measurement of how intense the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is.

The EPA provides daily forecasts of the expected UV Index across the United States. You can check the forecast for your area here.

This guideline will help you take the necessary precautions depending on the UV Index:
